O nascimento da exposição
A grande exposição mundial do século XX (Expo’98) que teve como lema “Os Oceanos, um Património para o Futuro”, realizou-se em Lisboa, Portugal, de 22 de maio a 30 de setembro de 1998. A exposição celebrou e aclamou a vida marinha e os benefícios dos oceanos, mais os feitos heróicos do povo português no século XV. Com a participação de 117 países, a exposição foi até aquela altura a exposição com mais países a participar. A ideia da exposição nasceu no verão de 1989 durante um almoço de bacalhau à Brás entre os senhores António Mega Ferreira e Vasco Graça Moura. Ambos fizeram o possível para que a ideia se tornasse realidade. Foi na zona oriental de Lisboa que se construíram os muitos edifícios onde decorreria a Expo’98. Muitos desses edifícios foram e ainda são extremamente interessantes de um ponto de vista arquitetónico como o Oceanário de Lisboa, um dos mais bonitos aquários da Europa, e o pavilhão de Portugal com a sua famosa pala. Antes da abertura oficial da Expo ’98 houve um ensaio geral a 9 de maio de 1998 que foi considerado um sucesso.

The birth of the exhibition
The major world exhibition of the 20th century (Expo'98), held in Lisbon, Portugal, took place from May 22 to September 30, 1998, and had as theme "The Oceans, a Heritage for the Future". The exposition acclaimed the marine life and benefits of the oceans, plus the heroic deeds of the Portuguese adventurers in the fifteenth century. The exhibition was until that time the exhibition with more countries to participatewith 117 countries in total. The idea of the exhibition was born in the summer of 1989 during a famous lunch between António Mega Ferreira and Vasco Graça Moura. They both did their best to make the idea come to life. It was in the eastern zone of Lisbon that the many buildings were built where Expo'98 would take place. Many of these buildings were and still are extremely interesting from an architectural point of view such as the Lisbon Oceanarium, one of the most beautiful aquariums in Europe, and the Portuguese pavilion with its famous flap. Before the official opening of Expo '98 there was a general rehearsal on May 9, 1998 which was considered a success.

As atrações diurnas e noturnas da Expo’98
De 22 de maio a 30 de setembro de 1998, durante os 132 dias da exposição mundial ocorreram todos os dias os mais diversos espetáculos nos vários palcos espalhados pelo recinto, ao longo dos Jardins Garcia de Orta como é o caso do Barco Palco, nos palcos na Travessa da Canela, e no palco da Praça Sony. Passaram por estes palcos artistas de nome nacional e internacional, e homenagearam-se artistas portugueses de nome nacional e internacional, como foi o caso da famosa Amália Rodrigues, que cantou o fado durante toda a sua vida exemplificando como este género musical evoca a melancolia e a saudade, tão típicos do povo português.
Uma outra atração na Expo foram os almoços e jantares no mais famoso restaurante da exposição, situado no ultimo andar da Torre Vasco da Gama (construída como homenagem aos feitos heróicos dos portugueses quinhentistas e às viagens de Vasco da Gama, em forma de mastro).
Os bonecos Gil e Docas, símbolos da exposição, socializaram-se todos os dias com os visitantes deliciando principalmente as crianças. A Exibição Náutica, os Olharapos, as sessões do Pavilhão da Utopia e a ”Peregrinação” com as suas chamas de fogo subindo ao céu e iluminando a noite, foram parte do dia a dia da Expo assim como o show Acqua Matrix. Durante 132 noites exatamente à meia noite os visitantes e trabalhadores da Expo puderam deliciar-se com o show Acqua Matrix na doca, que era um verdadeiro espetáculo.
Mas a grande jóia da exposição, de entre todos os pavilhões a visitar, foi mesmo o Pavilhão dos Oceanos, com os diferentes tanques representando os vários oceanos. Peter Chermayeff, o arquiteto americano responsável por este pavilhão, declarou que os responsáveis desejavam que os visitantes não se distraíssem com nada, e que se rendessem ao mundo mágico do oceanário. O que aconteceu!
The daytime and evening attractions of Expo’98
In 1998, from May 22 to September 30, during the 132 days of the world exposition, the most diverse spectacular shows took place on the various stages scattered around the Expo area:the stage ‘Barco Palco’ along the Garcia de Orta Gardens, the stage in Travessa da Canela, and the stage of Sony Square to name a few. Famous national and international artists performed on these stages. Such is the case of the famous Amália Rodrigues, honored during the Expo, for her rich ‘fado’career, exemplifying how the ‘fado’ musical genre evokes so well the feelings of melancholy and the ‘saudade’ (the feeling of missing someone dearly), an emotion so characteristic of the Portuguese people.
A very specialExpo attraction was the exhibition's most famous restaurant, ‘Vasco da Gama’ restaurant, located on the top floor of the ‘Vasco da Gama’ Tower (tower especiallybuilt as a tribute to the maritime deeds of the Portuguese in the 16th century and therefore built in the shape of a mast).
The ‘Gil and Docas’ dolls, symbols of the exhibition, socialized every day with the visitors, and made many children happy.
The Nautical Exhibition, the ‘Olharapos’ evening show, the sessions of the Utopia Pavilion and the ‘Pilgrimage’ show with its flames of fire rising up to the sky and illuminating the night, were all part of the day to day Expo attractions together with the beautiful ‘Acqua Matrix’ show. For 132 nights at exactly midnight, Expo visitors and employees delighted themselves with the this show at the dock, which was a real spectacle.
But the great jewel of the exhibition, together with so many interesting country pavilions to visit, was the ‘Oceans Pavilion’, with separate tanks and areas representing the several oceans. Peter Chermayeff, the American architect responsible for this spectacular work of art from an architectural point of view, stated that those in charge of this project wished visitors not to be distracted by anything and surrender to the magical world of the ‘oceanarium’. All those people succeeded achieving their goal!
A alegria dos dias passados na Expo’98
O sucesso da Expo’98 foi possível graças aos milhares de funcionários nacionais e estrangeiros que participaram no evento desde ministros, membros e funcionários do governo português, comissários, engenheiros, arquitetos, biólogos, jornalistas, operários das obras e trabalhadores que deram “a cara” ao publico.
Foi um enorme feito conseguir tornar a exposição realidade assim como foi uma enorme diversão trabalhar na exposição isto devido às múltiplas diversões diurnas e noturnas. Ao fundo da Rua D. Fuas Roupinho, por exemplo encontrava-se o bar mais popular da noite, o “Bugix” de Luís Represas, sem dúvida um dos sucessos da Expo’98.
Este bar tinha uma decoração interior extremamente atraente e a música era ótima. Estava sempre cheio de gente e a animação durava até às três da manhã. Neste bar as pessoas até em cima das mesas dançavam.
The joy of all days spent at the Expo’98
The success of Expo'98 was made possible by the thousands of national and foreign employees who participated in the event, from ministers, members and officials of the Portuguese government, commissioners, engineers, architects, biologists, journalists, and construction workers to those employees who were the face of the Expo’98 because they had direct contact with the public.
It was a great accomplishment to make the exhibitiontake place just as it was huge fun working at the exhibition. Those who worked directly in the precinct during the 132 days of Expo also had the opportunity to enjoy the multiple daytime and nighttime amusements. At the end of Rua D. Fuas Roupinho, for example was the most popular bar of the night, the ‘Bugix’ by Luís Represas, undoubtedly another success of Expo'98.This bar had an extremely attractive interior decor and the music was great. It was always full of people and the animation lasted until three in the morning. In this bar people even danced on the tables.

O tão apetecido banho de vulcão
The much-desired volcano shower
Funcionários da Expo ’98 colaram-se às paredes de um dos vulcões espalhados pelo recinto e levaram com uma explosão de água no último dia da exposição. Muitos miúdos e graúdos refrescaram-se desta maneira em grandes dias de calor durante visitas à Expo.
Expo '98 employees clung to the walls of one of the volcanoes scattered around the Expo precinct and got wet on the last day of the exhibition. Many kids and adults refreshed themselves this way on great hot summer days during Expo visits.
Visitas aos muitos pavilhões temáticos, as grandes filas de espera de uma ou duas horas para entrar nos pavilhões temáticos, os passeios nas cabinas do teleférico, as subidas à Torre Vasco da Gama, os namoros debaixo da pala do pavilhão de Portugal ou nos bancos em frente ao rio, e as músicas dia e noite ouvidas em todo o recinto fizeram as visitas à Expo qualquer coisa de muito especial. Os dias e noites passados na Expo’98 deixaram uma grande nostalgia. Isto porque a Expo foi um acontecimento que ligou as pessoas umas às outras para sempre.
Visits to the many themed pavilions, the long waiting lines of one or two hours to enter the theme pavilions, the tours in the cabins of the cable car, the ascents to the Tower Vasco da Gama, the flirtations under the flag of the Portuguese pavilion or in the banks in front of the Tagus river, and the songs day and night heard throughout the venue made the visits to the Expo something very special. The days and nights spent at Expo'98 left a great nostalgia. This is because the event of Expo linked people to each other forever.
