Segundo a lenda deambula um fantasma no 4º andar do edifício Elliott Ball Hall. Foi neste edifício que William Shamburg se enforcou a 26 de janeiro de 1947. A lenda conta que Shamburg desistiu dos seus estudos na universidade de Ball State para se registar na tropa e lutar pelos Estados Unidos durante a segunda guerra mundial. Quando regressou da guerra com a cara desfigurada a namorada que tinha deixado para trás rejeitou-o. Shamburg enforcou-se.
Hoje em dia, no ano de 1997, diz-se que há pouca luz no 4º andar de Elliott Hall, agora transformado em biblioteca, mesmo quando as lâmpadas são novas. Às vezes as luzes apagam-se neste andar enquanto nos outros andares os quartos continuam iluminados.
O guarda que faz rondas à noite no edifício diz que é arrepiante andar pelos corredores do 4º andar às 2 da manhã.
Eu tive a coragem de ir à biblioteca do 4º andar durante a noite. Embora ansiosa e evitando respirar, procurei combater os meus medos inclusive o medo dos fantasmas. (página 115)

According to legend, a ghost wanders the 4th floor of Elliott Ball Hall. It was in this building that William Shamburg hanged himself on January 26, 1947. Legend has it that Shamburg gave up his studies at Ball State University to register in the troops and fight for the United States during World War II. When he returned from the war with his disfigured face, the girlfriend he had left behind rejected him. Shamburg hanged himself.
Nowadays, the year 1997, it is said that there is little light on the 4th floor of Elliott Hall, now turned into a library, even when the lamps are new. Sometimes the lights go out on this floor while on the other floors the rooms remain lit.
The night watchman in the building says it's creepy to walk down the hallways on the 4th floor at 2 in the morning.
I had the nerve to go to the library on the 4th floor during the night. Although anxious and avoiding to breath, I tried to fight my fears, including the fear of ghosts. (page 115)
